The World’s Most Exclusive Motorcycle: NCR M16 MotoGP Sportbike

Italy-based motorcycle tuner NCR has announced that it will be offering an ultra-exclusive sportbike named the Millona 16 or M16 for short, a bike that takes one of the most expensive roadbikes ever built, throws almost all of it in the bin and replaces it with the most exotic materials on the planet.

Based off of Ducati’s fabulous $72,500 Desmosedici D16RR MotoGP replica street bike, the NCR M16 is guaranteed to provide even more jaw-dropping performance not to mention aesthetic charm. It was unveiled at the World Ducati Week on June 10, in front of hordes of faithful Ducatista.

The new NCR Millona M16 is the kind of bike that would make even Jorge Lorenzo stand up and take notice, the kind of motorcycle that many riders would give up their first-born just to ride once. Based on the Ducati Desmodesici, a rare bike in itself, the Millona M16 is even closer in specification to a MotoGP race bike on paper. In the flesh however, the design strays far from typical MotoGP race bikes, what with its half fairing.

Ducati’s Desmosedici RR broke new ground when it was released in 2006, as the first true MotoGP replica for the road. With more than 200 hp on tap and a svelte 171kg to haul about, it looked decades ahead of its time. But now that BMW’s S 1000 RR superbike can pretty much match those figures for a fraction of the Desmo’s US$77,000 pricetag, Desmosedici owners can stay ahead of the game by dropping their hallowed steeds off at NCR and having them worked over into this, the NCR M16.

That said it does feature a pair of exhausts, one exiting just aft of the crankcase and the other tucked handsomely into the duck tail rear section. And some of the work that’s gone into the subframe is very appealing. Having run racing teams in the Superbike World Championship (NCR Ducati etc), NCR knows a thing or two about making bikes go fast, and no expense has been spared on this stunning machine.

The Millona M16 boosts the Desmosedici’s power from 180hp (132kW) to around 200hp (147kW) at the rear wheel, which should be enough for a top speed in excess of the triple tonne. The 990cc V4 has come in for some serious tuning to reach more than 200hp, and as the photos show, a custom made 4 into 2 titanium exhaust with asymmetrical end pipes has been hand crafted for this particular work of automotive art.

Two hundred ponies is a lot of power in anyone’s book, but get this — NCR has kept the bike’s overall weight down to 145kg, which is lighter than most 800cc MotoGP V4 race bikes.

The bike’s low mass comes from its carbon fibre and titanium construction. With an ultra light-weight carbon fibre frame and carbon fibre swingarm, the NCR M16 Millona is guaranteed to be a very stiff motorcycle, without the sort of flex and give normally found in alloy frames.

Even the Desmo’s magnesium rims and superb metal discs are replaced by carbon fiber wheels and ceramic matrix composite discs with all bodywork, ensuring the M16 is one of the most exotic motorcycles ever made.

The fairings, already carbon fiber as stock, are cut down to a bare bikini minimum, the aluminum tank and CrMo steel trellis frame are thrown out in favor of custom carbon fiber units, and the swingarm, subframe and tailpiece are hand-made out of you guessed it. Anything that’s not carbon fiber is machined from titanium – engine covers, clip-ons, fuel filler cap, the whole exhaust systems – not to mention every single nut and bolt on the bike.

And even the electronics are MotoGP grade, but NCR has managed to keep many of the Desmosedici’s road-legal elements (lights and so forth) meaning that it could be legal to ride on the road in some countries. There are indicators and a brake light at the rear, but the front end seems to be without mirrors.

The ECU is pre-programmable with up to 3 different engine maps, there’s a fully adjustable traction control system to keep the power under control, and a datalogging and telemetry system that records everything from throttle, brake and gear inputs to what the suspension’s been up to as you were riding.

And then the business side of things – how much? Well, NCR has not released a price, saying it will divulge details to serious buyers only. However, we have already known the price tag. About EUR135,000 – that’s on top of the price of the Desmosedici RR donor bike.

Mechanical wristwatches (as opposed to battery-powered ones) offer us what sci-fi writer William Gibson called the "tamogotchi experience": the sense that we are wearing and tending to a living thing that whirrs and ticks on our wrist.

Throughout the years, these machines have kept the trains running on time and helped the Man in the Grey Flannel Suit make his two-martini lunch. Sadly, however, these gems are now frequently absent from our wrists thanks to those ubiquitous portable time-telling devices—laptops and cellphones.

Watch expert John Biggs, who runs crunchgear.com and is the author of a forthcoming book about watches for Dial Press, offers an in-depth look at some of the most amazing watches from this century and beyond—including a hockey-puck-size watch that is one of the most complex mechanical devices ever made.

1. 1794 | William Anthony's "The Pearl Star"

Why it Matters: The Pearl Star is one of the first watches with expanding hands.

The Story: Attributed to William Anthony of London, this pocket watch has an oblong case with automatically extending hands. When the hands are at noon, for example, they are fully extended up to the top of the case. When they are at 9:15, they automatically shorten to fit without touching the sides of the case.

2. 1800 | Perrin Freres "Wandering Hours"

Why it Matters: One of the first "digital" watches that used a unique system of hands to display the time.

The Story: The vision of a "digital" watch—meaning one that showed the hours in minutes using rotating numerals instead of hands—has always been an important pursuit in watchmaking. Perrin Freres of Switzerland created an amazing variation on this with the Wandering Hours in 1800. Three hands circled a central pivot and on the tip of each, four small hour numerals spin into place at the end of each hour. With the case closed, the watch looks like a fuel gauge showing minutes and hours but inside you find a riot of gears and hands.

3. 1910 | The Rolex Oyster Perpetual

Why it Matters: The Rolex Oyster redefined where you could take a watch by making it waterproof.

The Story: Like most great innovations, the Rolex merges two simple technologies to create something that no one thought they needed but then became indispensible. The technology, the perpetual movement, was first conceived by Louis Perrelet in the 1750s and was perfected by Rolex. A small weight wound the watch when the wearer moved his or her arm, resulting in a watch that ran "perpetually" with no need for daily winding.

The next innovation was a crown that screwed down to protect the inside of the watch from water. They advertised the first model in 1910 by dunking the watches in aquariums in watch shops around the world. Rolex thus became synonymous with diving watches.

4. 1923 - Patek Philippe "Packard"

Why it Matters: The result of a bet, the Packard is one of the first ultracomplicated watches.

The Story: James Ward Packard, of Packard automobile fame, wanted to own the most complex watch in the world. He sent his order to Patek Philippe in Switzerland and they sent back a watch in 1916 with 16 complications—watchspeak for features—including a star map that showed the night sky from his bedroom window in Warren, Ohio.

5. 1933 | Patek Philippe "Graves"

Why it Matters: This beast held the "complicated" crown for more than 50 years.

The Story: Not to be outdone by Packard, New York banker Henry Graves Jr. commissioned his own complicated watch from Patek Philippe. The result, called the Graves Complication, has 24 complications and sold for $11 million in 1999, making it one of the most expensive watches in the world.

6. 1973 | The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak

Why it Matters: This is the watch that made steel, titanium and ceramic popular watch materials.

The Story: While the name invokes pork and stuffy French drawing rooms, Audemars Piguet (pronounced Aw-de-mar Pig-ay) was founded in 1854 and for years made high-end watches for an exclusive clientele. While its neighbors in Switzerland focused on precious metals, jewels and bling, in 1972 Piguet hired designer Gerald Genta to make the world's first stainless-steel luxury watch, the Royal Oak. It originally cost around $2000 and has gone through many incarnations since then—including a massive $42,000 Outdoor Survivor edition that looks like something Neo would wear in The Matrix—but the Oak's octagonal case remains true to its origins.

7. 1989 | Patek Philippe Caliber 89

Why it Matters: The 89 is the most complex watch in the world.

The Story: This huge watch now hangs in the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva. Commissioned for the 150th anniversary of the company in 1988, the watch has 33 complications and is about as big as a hockey puck. Although the average smart watch can probably beat it for accuracy and features, to be able to cram astrological charts, calendars, and chimes into a mechanical device reminds us that mechanical watches still haven't lost their mystery. The only drawback? All this clockwork still needs to be wound daily.

8. 2003 - Breguet "Reveil du Tsar"

Why it Matters: This watch is one of the most elegant, complex watches on the market.

The Story: In 1813 Parisian watchmaker Breguet originally made a complicated pocket watch for Tsar Alexandar of Russia—it included pedometers for measuring his army's marching cadence. In 2003 the company, now based in Switzerland, created a complicated wristwatch based on the original watch. The new version includes a miniature alarm, multiple retrograde hands (hands that return to zero when they reach the end of the dial) and another time-zone indication.

With an austere, iPod-like design, the Reveil du Tsar is elegant and complicated at the same time.

9. 2006 - Jaeger-LeCoultre Gyrotourbillon

Why it Matters: This is the first watch to use Space Age techniques to perfect an invention created in the 18th century.

The Story: Watchmaker Abraham-Louis Breguet created the first tourbillons—French for "whirlwind"—during the French Revolution in order to offset the effects of gravity on the balance wheel, a tiny gear inside the movement that metes out the seconds. The tourbillon turned the balance wheel on one axis during the day, ensuring that no single side of the wheel was pulled more than any other.

Jaeger-LeCoultre wanted to improve on the mechanism and so created the gyrotourbillon, a three-dimensional wheel that rotates like a tiny planet on the watch face. Using modern engineering techniques and a 300-year-old invention, Jaeger-LeCoultre built one of the most mechanically stunning watch movements in the world. Inside the watch is a miniature globe that rotates on all axes like a miniature planet.

The promise is that listening to music will get easier. Hit Play on your wireless device and the audio comes out of your speakers — no cables or docks. Yeah, right. As is often the case, the simple solution has only added to the complexity, as tech behemoths and bit players square off in yet another format war.

At its most basic, the conflict breaks down into two camps: uncompressed and compressed — the former ostensibly delivering uncorrupted streams of music, the latter downsizing files to make them easier to move around.

Unfortunately, the definitions get terribly muddled. Terms like lossless, which would suggest raw audio, are often applied to formats that do indeed compress their streams (just not all that much). And some speakers built for uncompressed protocols like DLNA and Kleer have hardware limitations that don't deliver on the full potential of those formats; it's sort of like pulling onto the Autobahn on a moped.

In the end, it's a three-part equation: Source file + streaming protocol + receiving unit = what you hear. We can't do anything about what's in your music library, but we can help you with the rest.

Buying advice

If you're dealing with puny 128-bit MP3s, which have already been so chopped up and reassembled there's no saving them, a fast-and-dirty streaming standard like Bluetooth will be fine. AirPlay transmits at CD quality, so as long as your source files don't exceed 16-bit/44.1-kHz, they won't get compressed. But if you're starting with high-bit files like WAV and AIFF and want to preserve that quality, you'll need devices built for DLNA or Kleer. But you've also got to consider where you'll be streaming. Bluetooth and Kleer, which beam directly between device and speaker, struggle with distance and walls. AirPlay and DLNA units communicate over Wi-Fi networks, which makes them better choices for larger homes.

Glossary

2.4 GHz: The radio frequency most commonly used in wireless consumer electronics like cordless phones, routers, and Bluetooth devices.

24-bit/96-kHz: A high-end method for encoding digital audio. Payoff for the larger file sizes—a single song can be 100 MB—is added clarity and dynamic range.

16-bit/44.1-kHz: A step down from 24-bit in terms of dynamic range. Often referred to as "CD quality."

How We Tested

We selected one unit for each of the four formats we've discussed—AirPlay, DLNA, Bluetooth, Kleer—and set them up in a 950-square-foot apartment streaming rock, jazz, electronica, and hip hop from an MSI laptop, an Acer HTPC, an iPod Touch, and a Droid X.

1. Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin Air (AirPlay)

The Zeppelin looks elegant and sounds crisp, though it occasionally drops connections.

The Zeppelin is everything you'd expect from an Apple-anointed speaker: elegantly minimalist, reasonably powerful, and a tad pricey. In action, though, it's a bit more modest. After we waded through a few minutes of browser-based setup and wireless handshakes, the speaker was filling the apartment with the splashy hi-hats of Buddy Rich. But while the Zeppelin's 24-bit upscaling of AirPlay's 16-bit streams produced the crispest overall sound, it had a habit of dropping off the network every couple of days.

Wired: Clean audio and simple setup. Roomy 30-pin dock.

Tired: Drops connections. Skipping ahead in a song means a party-killing two-second pause.

2. Sony SA-NS400 HomeShare Network Speaker (DLNA)

Sony's speaker is solid as a wireless streamer, but it can't handle WAV files

This thumper is the epitome of no-frills pragmatism. Tedious network pairing did it no favors, but it's solid as a wireless streamer. Shooting audio from a Windows 7 machine and Droid X was easy, though laggy startups and rebuffering discouraged DJing. The Sony can't handle WAV files, however. Windows Media Player downscaled our WAVs into compatible formats, but that noticeably stunted the dramatic swells of Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir."

Wired: 3.5-mm input for wired playback. Single-button switching between audio sources.

Tired: Attention-grabbing in its homeliness. Middling mids and sloppy bass from the integrated sub.

3. Creative ZiiSound T6 (Bluetooth)

The T6 carries plenty of thump, but Bluetooth's downscaling sacrifices sound quality.

For a wireless system, the T6 sure is a cord-addled mess, with a set of thick wires connecting the satellites to the sub. Pairing and streaming at even 50 feet was mostly smooth, though walls between speaker and source caused hiccups. The shockingly powerful tweeters and sub rattled windows during Kanye West's "All of the Lights." But thanks to Bluetooth's tinny downscaling—which sacrifices some audio quality to work with less bandwidth — the song's brassy trumpets and swooning French horns rang hollow.

Wired: Dead-simple. Stable connectivity in close quarters.

Tired: Lacks the range and fidelity of other streamers. Overpowered low end.

Speaker: 6 out of 10

4. Arcam rCube (Kleer)

The rCube delivers excellent sound quality and portability, but at a price.

Kleer streaming offers easy device connections and CD-quality audio, but with a hitch: Wireless streaming requires an additional 30-pin transmitter for our iPod Touch and a USB dongle for our PC ($100 each). The splurge is mostly worth it, though. Pairing was easy, and audio quality rivaled the Zeppelin. Even when loud enough to upset the neighbors, the relentless horn blasts of Portishead's "All Mine" never crossed over into shrill. Even better, the rCube was the most portable speaker in our test.

Wired: Handsome looks. Room-filling audio with negligible lag. iPod dock doubles as handle.

Tired: Way expensive. Transmitters not included. Proprietary streaming tech = dongles 4 life.

Many of these tablets will debut in 2011. Here's a look at the models that have already been announced.

Apple iPad

Apple's iPad is far from the first tablet computer to have launched, but like many Apple products, it has redefined its category and quickly become the market leader. Perhaps the most appealing alternative to an iPad this holiday season will be Samsung's Galaxy Tab. Samsung plans to introduce more tablets in different sizes next year.

Dell Streak

Despite some skepticism over the Dell Streak's qualifications as a tablet (because it is so small), the PC maker is marketing the 5-inch device as such, under the description "pocket tablet." The company intends to launch larger tablets next year.

Archos may be the world's most prolific tablet maker. The French company was one of the first to come out with a tablet powered by Google's Android mobile platform, in 2009. This year, it added seven more models, including two designed to be stationed and used at home.

Barnes & Noble Nook Color

Operating system: Google's Android (2.1)
Launch date: mid-November 2010

Though technically an e-reader, Barnes & Noble's newest Nook boasts enough other features, including a full-color, 7-inch touch-screen, a Web browser and Android software that it could also qualify as a tablet. There's one catch, however: users will only have access to a selection of Android applications, rather than the full app store.

Toshiba Folio 100

Size: 10.1-inch screen, 1.7 pounds

Toshiba is another member of the Android camp. The PC maker built its own mobile applications and digital music store for the Folio which, at 10 inches, is larger than most Android tablets. The device is currently only available outside the U.S.; it launched outside the U.S. in early November.

Created by Marek Denko, a great fan of Mad Max Trilogy and particularly likes those fallout vehicles in the movie, this heavy buggy is built in four months.

The uncanny, rugged go anywhere vehicle’s most prominently noticeably part is jet engine strapped to the back of the vehicle. With all the aggressive looks, this road wracking beast is surely gonna outshine any supercar.

Built on the old rusty mad fallout buggy, the dragon’s safari has a normal combustion engine top fitted conventionally at the front, the exhaust system consists of pipes that run under and around the fuel tanks, heating the fuel as you drive and can drive in any environment – be it sand dunes, rough top snowfield and rocky field with shipwreck was the last one. Over the last few weeks, I have seen an array of wooden creations hitting the shelves and somehow thought of doing a round-up for our readers. Here, I have compiled a list of Top 12 Wooden Creations you would love to spend your money on.

12. S-series notebook concept

Designed by Simon Enever, the S-series notebook concept is made of wood. The notebook features one ultra-thin 4mm thick 17″ wide LCD screen that drastically reduces the thickness and bulk that 17-inch performance laptops usually have. The screen flips around and sits flush to produce the first ever stylish tablet. The screen itself is backed by black acrylic, you know, to compliment that wood base. Catering to business users, the S-series is a tablet PC powered by Windows Vista.

11. Half-retro, half-modern wooden car

A Ukrainian man gave up his job, sold his two other vehicles and spent one and a half years in his garage to create his dream vehicle. His literally half-modern, half-retro car has a wooden body made of thousands of oak parts. Vasily Lazarenko says the most difficult thing was to preserve the balance between the modern and vintage halves of his design, so that they didn’t clash with each other. Under the wooden bonnet there’s a 1981 Opel with a 100-horse-power engine. The wooden body was assembled with glue and bolts and is covered with five layers of waterproof and fire resistant lacquer.

10. Wooden Airplane

Some crazy folks do crazy makeovers of airplanes too! Like this neo-Victorian wooden airplane from Ukraine’s Aeroprakt. But, apparently, this wooden makeover is nothing but a custom paint job, so is not actually a modification, but maybe this Flintstones look might actually ring a bell with some millionaire. This is my kinda thing. Can anyone tell me where I could buy this one?

9. Tryane II wooden car

This beautiful wooden car featured here is not a result of any modification. This one is built from scratch by its creator Friend Wood. This one-of-a-kind wooden car titled Tryane II is hand-made through a process similar to that used by boat builders. The car weighs 900 pounds and it is capable of hitting a top speed of 100mph (160 km/h). It took Friend almost 2000 hours to create this work-of-art. No words on pricing.

8. Luxury Wooden Phone

Simply stunning! We have seen a whole lot of wooden PC cases and speakers decked in wood but have seen comparatively less of wooden phones except for the luxurious Mobiado and Hulger’s Ziricote Luxury Wooden Phone. So, another one got us drooling though its only a concept as of now. This sleek, sophisticated mobile phone features in the S-series from a design student Simon Enever. The designer has concentrated both on stylish looks and features as almost every key feature, from using the camera to making and receiving calls, is easily operated without the need to flip out the keypad.

7. Japanese wooden car

This might not look classy, but we know they are selling it. Built in Japan, the Wooden Supercar is made entirely out of wood except its engine and other mechanical gear. It is said to be made by some furniture manufacturer and can reach the speeds of up to 90km/h. The videos after the jump demos the Supercar in action and on the driving seat is the president of the furniture company. Priced at US $32,000, I don’t think anyone having brains will think of a ride in this risky car.

6. Olympus 3D Wooden Camera

After the luxurious gold-plated and diamond cameras, how about turning a green consumer with Olympus 3D Wooden Camera. The alluring wooden looks of the camera is achieved by three dimensional compression of the wood using latest Japanese technology. The wood used in the camera is the most desirable lumber in Japan that is used to build Shinto shrines and remarkable Buddhist architecture. The cypress wood body is even harder and more durable then any plastic.

5. Antique Clock case mod

The Antique Clock case mod is carved in mahogany wood and it packs a VIA processor, motherboard, 1 GB of crucial DDR2 memory and an eight-inch Earth LCD touch screen. The back also has the wi-fi antenna, power connector and a push-button power switch and there are two USB ports on the bottom of the case. The designer informs that he is ready to build one of these computers for $10,000.

4. Asus Ecobook

The ASUS’ green Ecobook aims to be as environmentally friendly as possible as ASUS is aiming for a 50% recyclable rate. The laptop touts biodegradable bamboo around the mouse pad, keyboard, and on the exteriors. The trackpad will also include a handwriting function that would let you use your fingers or stylus to enter text. The circular PowerGear button will glow red or green to indicate the amount of power being consumed. A treat for the eco lovers for sure!

3. Suissa’s Wooden Enlighten PC

Suissa, a company quite renowned for making natural wood luxury computers and components, has taken wraps off the Suissa Enlighten. It’s the first modularized PC from the house. Because of its exclusive form factor, Enlighten comes with a technology package slightly different than the rest of the Suissa collection. The salient specs include microATX motherboard, Intel Quad core CPU or AMD X2 6400+, single NVIDIA 8800GTX video card or ATI Radeon HD2900XT, 4GB PC6400 memory, 1TB hard drive space, and DVD burner. The power supply is concealed hidden in the block positioned below the Plexiglass faced wood ring. The natural, exceptional, and stunning looks of the Enlighten compensate aptly for its stocky price tag of US $16,000.

Splinter is an original project of a high-performance sportscar concept made of wood composites. It was started by industrial designer Joe Harmon to explore new materials and ideas. The versatility of wood allows the flexibility of experimentation and the incorporation of varied techniques and designs. Satisfied and excited though he is of his work, Mr.Hermon is painfully aware that his creation probably wouldn’t end up being a rage in the market, and appeal to, at the most, a few customers. Wood, with all its advantages, is prone to burns, cracks and splinters. Add to it the untested safety issues. The result: fewer customers. However, the features of the car are still under the wraps. All we know is that the car would be capable of speeds in excess of 240mph. It is due to hit the road later this year at a price yet to be decided.

2011 Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport

Sun-sopped Andalusia, home to Picasso and the flamenco, is a solitary landscape of rolling cordovan-hued hills stitched by vineyards and olive orchards and best explored on the back of a donkey. At 204 mph, Andalusia sprays at you in a brown and green smear.

At 204 mph, even freshly rolled pavement, paid for with lavish European Union loans, feels perilously lumpy as the subtle mounds and sags that are invisible at sane speeds become terrifying whoop-de-dos. At 204 mph, if you look down to check your speedometer for just one second, you’ll miss the next 299 feet. Our cerebral cortexes flirt with signal overload at 204, but a Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport is just getting its wind up and will accelerate another 54 mph before tripping its electronic speed limiter. Drop-down oxygen masks and lighted placards over the emergency exits just might make this thing FAA certifiable.

Apparently, it’s because the regular Veyron is such a pansy jellyfish of a car that Bugatti brings forth the Super Sport. The model will be the last word in Veyrons, representing the final 40 cars in a total production run of 300. Price: one hundred thousand trillion billion dollars, or it might as well be.

For the $2,426,904 a Super Sport costs (at the time of this printing), you could also buy 10 Ferrari 458 Italias and have $127,654 left over for lunch. In its quest to build the ultimate stroke job for the super-rich, the Molsheim operatives don’t seem very concerned with pragmatic constraints such as fiscal prudence or, indeed, the laws of physics.

For example, the Super Sport needed more than just another 20 horsepower to separate itself from the $1.7 million rental-fleet Veyron with its piddly 1001 ponies. Why not another thou? Bugatti probably considered it. But it was decreed that a 20 percent bump in output, to 1200 horsepower and 1106 pound-feet of torque is genug. Enough. So say the Germans who run Volkswagen’s crazy-bus subsidiary, and they don’t say that very often.

Consider these facts: Bugatti prices the Super Sport at 1.65 million euros and will charge the 10 to 12 expected American buyers based on the spot exchange rate. Thus, if the dollar softens by a mere cent against the euro, the car’s window sticker jumps more than $16,000.

Every U.S. Super Sport buyer also pays a 2.71 percent import duty, or about $62,000, plus a $51,000 delivery charge and $6400 in federal gas-guzzler tax. Adding an extra year to a regular Veyron’s two-year factory warranty costs about $70,000, though Super Sport buyers get it free.

A set of the Super Sport’s special Michelin tires cost $42,000 and may last 10,000 miles if you’re careful, though they last only 15 minutes at the car’s top speed (at that pace, however, the 26.4-gallon tank is sucked dry in just 10 minutes, and there’s no place on Earth to safely go that fast that long anyway, so no worries). At the third tire replacement, Michelin requires that you also swap out the $69,000 wheels—coincidentally, the only wheels that fit those tires—to ensure a proper bead seal.

Personal touches are available, such as your own initials instead of Ettore Bugatti’s etched into the gas cap. One customer paid for illuminated doorsills with “words that can’t be repeated,” said a Bugatti staffer. If you want the Super Sport’s body finished in clear-coated carbon fiber instead of paint, add $428,180—just a bit more than the price of a new Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupé.

Let’s be blunt: This car is completely mental. At the Super Sport drive in the dusty hills near Jerez de la Frontera, even its chief engineer, Wolfgang Schreiber, admitted that it’s easier to find an honest hedge fund-manager than places to use 1001 horsepower, let alone 1200.

“Most of our customers drive very normal. Actually, slow,” said Schreiber. “So we needed changes you could see and feel at any speed.”

Since 2005, Bugatti has put 243 Veyrons into customer hands, enough to constitute a focus group of sorts. According to Schreiber, the buyers say they would like a skosh more edge to the car’s handling. We feel their pain. Every Veyron we’ve encountered has accelerated like a line drive off the cricket bat of Shiva but has steered no better than your average Lexus. Perhaps that’s why that guy in Texas made Youtube history by driving his into a lagoon. Either that or he is just an idiot.

Whatever. Bugatti says the Super Sport embodies everything it has learned about the Veyron and its customers over five years. No, it doesn’t come with an inflatable dinghy, but the revised shock tuning and stiffer sway bars do help to elevate the driver’s connection and involvement. The nose dives for turns with far more enthusiasm, and body motion is better controlled, giving the pilot a clearer sense of where the threshold lies between acing a fast corner and flying off into low orbit.

That’s rather vital in a hypercar that can easily triple its speed between mailboxes. So are brakes, and the Super Sport’s carbon-composite discs (15.7 inches in front) are literally breathtaking. Should a truck suddenly turn into your lane, you can drag down the Bug from 140 mph to, say, 53.7 with astonishing alacrity and enough foot control to leave a gap twice the width of your front license plate should you desire to cause cardiac dysrhythmia in your passenger.

To get the Super Sport to its 268-mph production-car land speed world record (real production Super Sports are limited to a tire-saving 258 mph), Bugatti did a little smoothing of the Veyron’s Humpty Dumpty shape. Most noticeably, the polished aluminum bazookas on the regular Veyron’s back that sluice air to the engine are gone. In their place is a sort of carbon-fiber turtle shell that forms a tunnel through which the driver sees what he just left far behind and which is cut with flush-fitting twin NACA ducts.

If you want to show off the engine, it takes two trained technicians about 30 minutes to remove the couple-dozen fasteners holding down the shell. Nevertheless, Schreiber says the ducts increase power by creating a greater ram-air effect than the bazookas while also offering reduced drag.

Further, Bugatti opened up the front radiator nostrils, added a pair of slots under the headlights that feed wind directly to the front brakes, and reshaped the front splitter and rear diffuser for increased downforce. With the reprogrammed rear wing deployed, the body generates 882 pounds of downforce at its top speed. At 204 mph, we can report that it feels slot-car stable.

Launch control should deliver 60 mph in 2.4 seconds. Bugatti recommends an oil change every 3000 miles (or once a year) and a spark-plug change at 37,000 miles. All the bodywork aft of the doors comes off for that.

The extra output—199 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque—comes via four turbos that are 10 percent larger and bolted to the otherwise unchanged 16-cylinder warp drive in back. A less restrictive exhaust contributes as well. Fuel pressure is turned up, and an extra pair of in-tank fuel pumps—there are two in the base car, four in the Super Sport—do the juicing. The seven-speed, dual-clutch automated manual drives beefier prop shafts through a reinforced second and third gear and a taller seventh gear, which makes for a claimed 10 percent highway-mileage bump.

With its carbon-fiber outer panels, the Super Sport is 110 pounds lighter than the base, aluminum-bodied Veyron. A new, stiffer carbon-fiber weave is employed in the tub and saves 55 pounds alone. Bugatti also relocates the rear-differential cooler from the passenger-side gill to the rear diffuser, which reduces plumbing hardware, and unique wheels shave a net 25 pounds.

The Super Sport is still much too big and way too heavy to feel like a second skin. With its high sills and dash, it feels more like a really fast Jacuzzi. It’s loud inside—and not the delicious kind of loud you get in a Ferrari. The tires moan oppressively at any speed, and the engine’s voice is mostly a white noise of whirring and whooshing.

It exists mainly as an objet d’art for its owner and a one-car circus parade for the fawning public. It is perhaps the apogee of internal-combustion performance, the final word before the dawning dictatorship of electric pods. It is a Bugatti.

Developed by Group Phi, this sustainable school has been constructed in Pune, Maharashtra, India. The school is the first military school for girls in India and has been built with sustainability as one of the main criteria. The building will provide ample learning space for 720 students and also space for other activities. The building comes with a gray water recycling system to reuse waste water. The courtyards are covered with polycarbonate sheets, which protect the corridors from rainfall, and by maximizing daylight they also reduce the amount of energy required to illuminate the interiors. The use of natural materials will lower the school’s footprint and also keep the students close to nature.

• Pugh + Scarpa Architects’ Animo Leadership High School:

Designed for Animo Leadership High School by Pugh + Scarpa Architects this green building targets LEED or CHPS certification. The building’s south façade houses about 650 solar panels which will reduce carbon emissions by over 3 million pounds. Faceted and ribbed screens appear as a façade motif that visually connect the school with the community and modulate light to protect the building from unwanted solar heat gain. Solar panels form the screen system on the longest façade of the building, which are augmented by additional panels on the roof.

• Kita Design’s Sun-powered Tree-top Classrooms:

The Elleray Preparatory School in the UK features a unique set of forest classrooms that are designed by Robert Gaukroger of Kita Design Company. Constructed in the form of self-sufficient pods, the classrooms are fashioned from recycled materials and generate renewable solar energy for lighting. The units are constructed from ribbed timber frame set upon Douglas fir stilts and then clad in English chestnut shingles.

• Mikou Design Studio’s Docks School:

The Docks School has been designed to be built in Saint Ouen, France by Mikou Design Studio. The development will be visible because of its roof, which provides a stepped tier structure offering space for various departments. The nursery and the primary school are sheltered by canopies laden with photovoltaic panels, which are inclined at an angle of 30 degrees for maximum sun exposure. These panels are spaced by solid metal strips to avoid shadows being cast.

• Project FROG’s modular classrooms:

Developed by Project FROG, these modular classrooms are outfitted with 60 solar panels that reduce the electricity costs to zero and generate more energy that the building uses. The 3500sqf classroom space has been built for Watkinson School and the project took only six months to complete.

• 3DReid’s RotatED:

The RotatED has been developed in collaboration with Blue Forest, and can be turned on any of its seven sides to create an outdoor place with multiple application areas. • Arkhefield’s Creative Pavilion:

The Creative Pavilion by Arkhefield Architecture not only takes the existing standard institutional structures to another level, but also makes them sustainable. The idea behind the building was to stimulate the social and learning values within the school through contrasting and existing spaces. The space inside the building is enough to house six classrooms or even a school concert. The simple design of the building not only keeps the construction material to a minimum, but also minimizes the environmental costs in terms of the building’s footprints and the energy usage. The building has open facades which provide natural light minimizing the amount of energy required for lighting. The large expanse of the roof has been made to good use by installing a water tank to harvest rain water.

• Blue Forest’s off-grid ‘Eco Classroom’:

Designed for Benenden School in Kent, the Eco-Classroom will provide an innovative teaching space that is surrounded by mature parkland. The unique education facility is designed to be entirely off-grid, relying only on solar energy for electricity. Constructed using sustainably harvested timber and incorporating a green roof, the Eco-Classroom also features a green roof that allows the structure to blend in perfectly with the woodlands. The structure is also the first building in the UK that processes harvested rainwater from the green roof into hot and cold drinking water using solar energy

• Foster + Partners Langley Academy:

Developed by Foster + Partners in Slough, England, the Langley Academy is a three-story building designed with a full-height atrium and provides assembly space for 1100 students. The building is designed to save 20% in water consumption, by harnessing rainwater and gray water, which is filtered for reuse in sanitation and irrigation. Moreover, the building’s energy-efficient design and the use of solar collectors on the roof help save 150 tons of CO2 from being released into the atmosphere annually.

• New Hillside Middle School:

The Hillside Middle School in Salt Lake City School District, one of the oldest public school districts in Utah, has set up high standards with their green credentials for the others to follow. The $20 million structure maximizes the use of natural light to save on energy. The insulated windows keep away the heat, offering the students to study in a cool environment. The paints that have been used have low levels of volatile-organic compounds. The sort of hybrid house-animal is both a house and furniture. Inhabitants could enjoy its informal seating arrangement including mats on the ground, the laminated wood frame as a bench and a low dining table.

The hut, which is a sukkah basically, is raised on three levels: a flowing frame, curved surfaces and the schach. The flowing frame utilizes salvaged joists for the flexible wooden strips, which are glued together to create smoothly curved surfaces. The strips combine to form a lightweight composite that lends robustness to the entire construction. Deadfall and storm-damaged limbs from street trees forms the schach that can be replaced every year.

Desert Aerospace modifies TST-14J

Pulling traditional Sailplane to an altitude before taking glide is a thing of past. Now a bunch of creative minds have given boost to self-launching gliders by adding retractable jet engine which is located right behind the cockpit. The initiative was taken by Desert Aerospace, a small New Mexico company, which aims to build an alternative to the expensive self-launching German gliders by combining a high-performance glider and a small jet engine, designed for use in unmanned aerial vehicles.

For that purpose the, Desert Aerospace has modified a two-seat TST-14J sailplane to fit a 45 pound PBS TJ-100 jet engine that weighs merely 45 pounds and produces 240 pounds of thrust. The tiny engine allows the glider to climb at more than 900 feet per minute, however; at the soaring altitude, the engine folds down inside the fuselage and retractable doors provide an aerodynamic covering.

The jet engine has a fuel consumption of 20 gallons per hour and is currently under testing. The Desert Aerospace hasn’t revealed the test data or the pricing details either but it assures that it’ll be cheaper than the current self-launching gliders.
